Organized for Battle

Then he [David] took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. [1Samuel 17:40 NKJV]

When we think of the story of David and Goliath, we always seem to emphasize the slingshot.  If we read 1 Samuel 17:40 we also see some of the other items David had with him when he went out to confront Goliath.  He also had a staff, 5 smooth stones, and a shepherd’s bag. He had been offered Saul’s armor but didn’t take it.

Without the stones the slingshot would have been useless and without the shepherd’s bag the stones would not have been readily accessible. In essence, David was organized for battle.

In our daily battles with the enemy we need our ammunition near at hand. Are we prepared and organized? Do you have a Bible on your phone, carry a small New Testament in your pocket or purse? Is there a Bible by your bed or on your desk? Do you read it daily?

God’s Word is a potent weapon but only if we keep it readily accessible.  Remember Jesus confronted Satan in the desert with the Word of God.
