The Old Man
Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. Romans 6:6
The Greek word for “old” does not refer to something old in years but to something that is worn out and useless. Our old self died with Christ, and the life we now enjoy is a new divinely given life that is the life of Christ Himself.
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life that I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20
When a person trusts in Christ for salvation, he spiritually participates with the Lord in His crucifixion and His victory over sin and death. The believers’ “new man” has the privilege of the indwelling Christ empowering him and living through him.
I have memories of my old sinful ways but Christ has filled me and I no longer follow my old sinful ways as if I was under its evil influence. When Christ said it is finished and gave up His spirit, at that moment those that believe in Him were saved. Jesus was forsaken on the cross, he experienced abandonment and despair that resulted from the outpouring of divine wrath on him as our sin bearer.
I am thankful that the love of Jesus has set us apart from the old man.
